Make a Submission

Global South Development Magazine (GSDM) welcomes submissions from development practitioners, journalists, researchers, community and NGO workers, students, and others with informed perspectives on international development issues. Established in 2010, GSDM has long served as an open platform for voices from across the world.

Feature articles: 1,000–5,500 words

GSDM accepts a wide range of formats and writing styles, provided they are meaningfully related to international/global development issues. We particularly welcome original reporting, informed analysis, first-hand experiences, and perspectives from people directly engaged with development issues.

What to submit?

Articles and op-ed pieces: 300–1,200 words

Feature articles: 1,000–5,500 words

News and news analysis

Photographs and photo stories

Short memoirs: 500–1000 words

Each submission should have a clear title and be accompanied by:

A short author biography of approximately 60–90 words

A high-resolution headshot of the author

Please do not submit lengthy academic papers with extensive academic references. GSDM is an online magazine rather than an academic journal, and we are primarily interested in accessible, engaging, and well-informed writing for a broad readership.

Academic research can certainly provide the foundation for an article, but we encourage contributors to present their ideas, evidence, and findings in a clear and reader-friendly way.

Article Processing Charges (APC)

Once a submission is approved for publication, we charge a modest APC for unsolicited submissions.

After many years of providing this service for free, we introduced a small Article Processing Charge (APC) for unsolicited submissions starting August 1, 2026. This helps us cover the growing costs of editorial work and publication, maintain professional quality, and continue operating the magazine at a time when significant cuts in development communications funding have affected many of the organisations and agencies that previously used our paid communications services.

APC rates

Standard APC: €75

Reduced APC: €55 (for contributors based in low- and middle-income countries.)

All submissions are first reviewed by the GSDM staff. An APC is charged only after an article has been editorially reviewed and accepted for publication. We do not charge a submission fee, and submitting an article does not create any obligation to pay.

Not all articles are subject to an APC. GSDM may publish selected submissions without charge, depending on the nature of the contribution, its newsworthiness, relevance, source, and other editorial considerations. The APC applies only to unsolicited submissions. Commissioned articles, invited contributions, and other editorially commissioned content are not subject to this charge.
